William Hudson

William Hudson is the brother of my fourth great grandfather, Joseph Hudson. My ancestor is ususally referred to as "The father of the 16 kids" because without Joseph and Dorothy's large family, the Giggleswickian Hudsons likely would have died out.

Their parents were James and Ann (nee Brayshaw) Hudson.

A few days ago I wasn't feeling well... I stayed home and worked on compiling William's genealogy. In England I had worked on this family with the indexes of Parish Records at the North Riding County Record Office in Northallerton. It wasn't until more recently I have had the time to compile William's descendants a little more...

Descendants of William HUDSON as of... 15 Nov 2007

First Generation

1. William HUDSON was christened on 13 Mar 1768 in Horton in Ribblesdale Parish, Horton in Ribblesdale, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of James and Ann (Brayshaw) HUDSON)

William HUDSON and Margaret AYRAY were married on 18 Feb 1797 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England. Margaret AYRAY (daughter of William AYRAY) was born about 1772. She was buried on 6 Oct 1813 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England. William HUDSON and Margaret AYRAY had the following children:

i. James HUDSON was christened on 30 Jul 1797 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England.
ii. William HUDSON was christened on 28 Apr 1799 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England. He was buried on 16 Aug 1808 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England.
iii. Charles HUDSON was christened on 7 Feb 1802 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England. He died of Small Pox on 31 Aug 1808 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England. He was buried on 2 Sep 1808 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England.
+5 iv. Nanny HUDSON, born on 31 Aug 1803, Clapham, Yorkshire, England; he married Andrew HEATON, on 20 Nov 1824, Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England
+6 v. Elizabeth (Betty) HUDSON, born on 22 Jan 1807, Clapham, Yorkshire, England12; married Richard STOCKDALE, on 1 May 1824, Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England
vi. Mary HUDSON was born on 19 Nov 1808 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England. She was christened on 25 Dec 1808 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England.
vii. Henry HUDSON was christened on 13 Oct 1811 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England. He was buried on 8 Dec 1812 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England.

William HUDSON and Mary BLACKWELL were married on 21 Aug 1816 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England.

Mary BLACKWELL was born about 1780. William and Mary appeared in the census on 6 Jun 1841 in Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England. She was buried on 6 Mar 1844 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England. William HUDSON and Mary BLACKWELL had the following children:

i. John HUDSON was christened on 8 Dec 1816 in Clapham, Yorkshire, England.19 He was buried on 22 Nov 1819 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England.
+ii. Joseph HUDSON, married Hannah HORNER, on 5 Aug 1848, Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England
iii. Thomas HUDSON was christened on 24 Nov 1822 in Giggleswick Parish, Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England.22 He appeared in the census on 6 Jun 1841 in Giggleswick, Yorkshire, England. He appeared in the census on 30 Mar 1851 in Starlton and Thorlby, Yorkshire, England.

At this point, I only have descendants for three of his ten children... Four of his children definitely died without leaving any issue as they were young children. Another of his children (Thomas) evidently reached bachelorhood without marrying. There were three children, Joseph, Nanny and Elizabeth who have descendants.

I am still seeking what became of some of his children, as there are a few whose marriages I have not found... James (the eldest) and Mary (the sixth child) have no marriages attached to them. I have not been able to find them.

Are you related to either James or Mary? What about any of the other kids?

As I am a little obsessive compulsive, I will research these families until I have them fully satisfactorily figured out...

Is Satisfactorily a word?

Fun place to visit...

If you're ever in Giggleswick or Settle, a nice place to visit is my old Ancestral Village of Langcliffe. According to the Settle Tourism Board, Langcliffe has "the best Green in the area"...

It really did have a nice little park in the center of the town. I visited twice and I never came across many residents of this town...

From a Gazetteer in 1868: "LANGCLIFFE, a township in the parish of Giggleswick, W. division of the wapentake of Staincliffe, West Riding county York, 1 mile N.E. of Settle, its post town, and 16 miles S.E. of Skipton. The village, which is small, is situated on the river Ribble. This township includes the hamlet of Winskill. Many interesting fossils have been found here. A portion of the inhabitants are engaged in the paper and cotton mills. The Catterick Toss waterfall is in this neighbourhood. The land is chiefly in pasture. The soil is sandy, with subsoil limestone. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Ripon, value £60. The church, dedicated to St. John the Evangelist, is a newly erected stone edifice containing two bells. There is a National school for both sexes in which a Sunday-school is also held. The Methodists have a place of worship. Langcliffe Hall is the principal residence."

It truly is a beautiful little town.

If you're related to the Hudson family who lived there, please let me know!
