Agnes Morphet married a Nutter...

Yesterday I had a breakthrough with tracing a newfound member of my family.

This summer I came across this little girl in England... I thought I'd found the whole family. Turns out, I was wrong!

Stainforth Parish
Page 3, No. 20
7 April 1844
Agnes, daughter of Matthew and Grace Morphet
Abode: Stainforth
Occupation of Father: Labourer
Performed by William Richardson, Incumbent.

In 1848, both of her parents died in a workhouse leaving Agnes an orphan at about age four and a half. Agnes was the youngest sister of my great great great grandmother, Ellen Alice Morphet. She was the daughter of Matthew Morphet and Grace Sharp.

In 1851, she was living with an Aunt Mary (Sharp) who was at the time married to John Ireland and living in Langcliffe. In 1861, Agnes was working at a servant to a Gaoler (Jailer) in Walmgate.

After that, I didn't know what happened to her...

That is when I did some clever searching on http://www.ancestry.com/ in their UK Census Collection. I found her in 1871, 1881 and 1891. She evidently lived in Durham, Hunslet, Yorkshire and Sabden, Lancashire during this time. She moved a lot! She married Eli Nutter. I cannot find her on the 1901 census but the name Nutter is repeatedly misspelled on indexes.

She also lived in a place called North Meols. I haven't checked to find where this is located. Its somewhere in Lancashire but must be an area in Lancashire I've never looked! Its not familiar to me.

I am happy that Agnes' history is a little more explained now.

A Daily Dose of Giggleswick...

Although not Giggleswick, this is a back road in Settle---the neighboring Market town. A nearby building says it was a Weaver's cottage. Could these row homes also have been weavers' cottagers? And could my weaver ancestors have lived here?
You can decide for yourself. I choose to believe they did.

Its a gorgeous part of the town very close to the Procter house.

Settle Burial Records

The ancient town of Settle is the market town for Giggleswick. It is where, in all likelihood, Giggleswickians went to shop and sell their wares. The town is still beautiful and I loved visiting.
One side of the River Ribble is Giggleswick and the other is Settle. There is even a sign which shows the boundary line. (See Above, taken this past May.)

While in England, I had the great fortune of finding a printed edition of the Settle Churchyard Burial records published by the Settle Parochial Church Council in 2001. The North Riding County Record Office in Northallerton has no burial records at all for this church.
The Family History Library Catalog has Bishops' Transcripts for some burials, but not all. The NYCRO workers had never heard of this town and weren't familiar with the records.
Through a turn of events, I was able to get a copy of this book.
It is only covering burials starting in 1838 but covers until the year 2000. It is a small churchyard. But what a prize to have probably the only copy of these burial records in the entire United States! Only a limited number were ever printed. If you're interested in a copy, contact me and I will give you the contact information for the man who put them together. He asks only for a donation to the church. And, since these records are not available elsewhere, a generous donation is preferred!
When I begin my Giggleswick research of the town, I will use this valuable (sentimental, not monetary) resource.
Now I just need to get my hands on the Lune-Ribblesdale Parish indexes created by the NYCRO which covers Giggleswick... Hmmm...

The Basis of my research...

The following is the basis for most of my research on the Hudson family. This research has been conducted over the past year of my British research classes at Brigham Young University.

If you use this data, please do not distribute it without my permission. I have spent many hours (and money) preparing this family group record and would appreciate it!

To give some background, the Hudson family appears the first time in the late 1750's or early 1760's in Horton in Ribblesdale. By the 1800's, only a few Hudsons remain (Joseph and his brothers, William and Miles) ... All married girls in Giggleswick and settled there with their families. Joseph had 16 children with his wife Dorothy and almost all reached adulthood.

If you would like more information, please let me know! I have extractions of all christenings, marriages, census, burials, etc. I am trying to find information on the extended lines of those who married Hudsons as well. If any surnames match yours, please let me know.

Miles Hudson is highlighted as he is my direct line.

I have traced most of the descendants of Joseph Hudson and Dorothy Metcalfe (including married female descendants) to 1901 or beyond. I am working on tracing the descendants of Joseph's two brothers who remained in Giggleswick.

Thank you!

My plans as a Giggleswickian...

My great great great grandparents were my most recent "born in Giggleswick" ancestors. However, I feel very much as if I am a true Giggleswickian...

When I visited England this summer, I made three trips to visit Giggleswick, Settle, Langcliffe and Stackhouse. I was not able to visit everywhere that I would have liked to visit... but I did go to the Settle Workhouse (actually located in Giggleswick: now a hospital...) Walked the hills of Langcliffe. Visited the local churches. I even visited Ye Olde Naked Man Cafe. I had a wonderful time.

Currently, I'm working on a project to trace where Giggleswickians settled after the Langcliffe mills closed around the year 1855...

In the future, I am hoping to basically trace all major Giggleswickian families through the British Census as well as link them with the Parish records. (Essentially completing a Population study...)

I may try to contact the North Riding County Record Office. Perhaps they will exchange a copy of some of their records (they have extracted the whole parish) in exchange for me completing the genealogical research.

I have a copy of the Settle Chapelry burials which is only published locally. It is a real treasure and would be a great asset to tracing all the families of Giggleswick.

My Giggleswick Ancestors

I am a genealogist researching the HUDSON family of Giggleswick... I have been tracing the descendants of Joseph Hudson and his wife Dorothy Metcalfe of Giggleswick and Langcliffe, Yorkshire, England.
